Typefaces VS Fonts

To understand the difference between the two terms we need to know a wider definition which is the definition of typography. Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and visually appealing. It involves selecting typefaces, fonts, spacing, and layout to communicate information effectively and enhance the aesthetic quality of text-based communication.

Typefaces

A typeface is a set of letters, numbers, and symbols that share a similar design style. It defines the overall look and feel of the characters, including their shape, thickness, and style.

Ex: Helvatica — Roboto

Fonts

A font refers to a specific variation or style within a typeface. It includes characteristics like size, weight (boldness), and any additional attributes such as italicization or special effects. So, a font is a particular version of a typeface.

Ex: Helvatica bold — Roboto italic

Example

Imagine you’re building a sandcastle. The typeface is like the design you choose for your castle, whether it’s tall towers or round turrets. The font is like the actual sand you use to build it, whether it’s smooth or grainy. So, typeface is the style, and font is the specific way it looks.
